On The Unit

Security

We're secure. In the NICU we take several precautions to ensure your babies health and safety. Sick or premature babies cannot fight germs as well as healthy, full-term babies and are more likely to develop infections. In the NICU we use a system called cohorting, which simply keeps the babies in small groups to limit the number of people that come into contact with them, limiting their chance for infection. We ask that you follow the guidelines listed below to decrease the number of germs that may come into contact with your baby.

Upon entering the NICU you will be instructed to wash your hands and put on a cover gown. These measures are designed to protect babies against infection. When you arrive to visit your infant, you will be asked to show your hospital identification bracelet to the nursing staff. Parents, grandparents, and other visitors will need to have picture ID available. Finally you will be asked to complete a name tag to wear while inside the NICU.

Help us keep your baby safe. When you call NICU ask for the nurse caring for your baby and please use the last name of the baby's mother. We realize grandparents and other family members are concerned; however, to protect the privacy and confidentiality of our families, we only give information to the parents of the baby.

Especially for Parents

Having a child in NICU can be a stressful time for your family. We have provided a few tips to assist in making your stay more manageable.

  1. Pay attention to your own needs and those of your family. Plan weekly family activities, talk and engage all members of the family, even young siblings.
  2. Turn to other parents in the NICU for support. We offer weekly support groups with NICU professionals to discuss questions and share experiences.
  3. For antepardon patients take advantage of our activities room for baby showers and small group meetings.
  4. Enjoy your baby as they get better.
  5. Ask a lot of questions. The more you know the better we can nurse your baby back to health.
