NICU

We understand. Many new parents or even experienced parents face anxiety when their baby is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Initially, it may feel uncomfortable, even foreign; however understanding you are the most important health care team member is essential to your baby’s health. Rest assured our team of doctors, nurses, and other caregivers in the unit will do their best to provide emotional support for you while caring for your infant’s medical needs.

While we pride ourselves in providing exceptional health care, you give your baby love and comfort. NICU Online is intended to provide you with the necessary tools to be confident and reduce your fears in dealing with your baby’s medical condition. The more you know, the better we can collaborate to ensure the best care for your child.

We invite you to ask questions, it’s normal. The NICU staff is prepared to answer your questions. Our team consists of health care professionals who are here to help your baby and support you. You are an essential part of your baby’s care. We encourage you to visit as often as possible – to hold, touch, talk to and take care of your baby as their condition allows.

We’re sure you’re curious, what is NICU? NICU is our 124-bed intensive care unit created for sick newborns that need specialized treatment because they're still developing rapidly. The unit is specialized with equipment designed for infants and a hospital staff who have special training in emergency newborn care. NICU offers two levels of care; intensive care (Level III) and intermediate care (Level II), both designed to assist your baby’s development. At Woman’s a board-certified neonatologist is onsite 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Neonatologists diagnose and treat medical conditions in newborns, coordinate the medical care and management of premature and critically ill infants, and provide care to newborns during a complicated delivery. They have the training to treat even the smallest infants.

Our NICU is conveniently located close to the mother’s rooms, so moms and dads can visit their newborn without even having to take off their slippers! Only very young babies (or babies with a condition linked to being born prematurely) are treated in the NICU – they’re usually infants who haven’t gone home from the hospital yet after being born. Take comfort in knowing your baby is just down the hall.
